Consultation between Hungarian Deputy Ombudsman Marcel Szabó and his Moldovan Counterpart

ICDT has launched its project “Supporting the Revision of the Law on the Ombudsman Service in Moldova”. Within the framework of the Justice Reform Working Group of the Community of Democracies (CoD) the Centre aims to assist in the work of the ombudsman service on the drafting of the new document and the reform of the institution by sharing the relevant Hungarian experience. The cooperation is also meant to assess the possibilities of establishing a twinning project between the two offices.

The Center for Human Rights of Moldova (CHRM) is an institution of Parliamentary Advocates, similar to the European and international institutes of Ombudsman. It operates since 1998 and is an important non-judicial mechanism of protecting human rights.

As a first step of the joint work, Hungarian Deputy Ombudsman Dr. Marcel Szabó met Mr. Anatolie Munteanu, Director of the Center for Human Rights of Moldova on July 8, 2013 in Chisinau.

The parties has discussed the current status of the law of the Moldovan Ombudsman and agreed on the further steps of the project. Dr. Szabó and his team are currently reviewing the draft version of the law provided by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova and are preparing for further consultations with the assistance of ICDT.

The project is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary.
