ICDT Contributing to the International Conference on Preventing Terrorism through Countering Radicalization and Violent Extremism in Europe

A major international security conference was held in Budapest on May 29-30, organized by the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UN Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in cooperation with the ICDT. The two-day event featured several high-ranking speakers from relevant and notable institutions dealing with the issue of counter-terrorism and attracted a wide range of audience of international level, including distinguished guests.

During his welcoming address, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. János Martonyi highlighted ICDT’s role in supporting democratic transition worldwide and thus contributing to developments that can prevent radicalization and violent extremism.

The panels of the conference addressed various issues of the field of counter-terrorism such as the challenges of the phenomenon, the use of internet for terrorist purposes, the role of the victims, as well as the civil society, and the ways and methods to cope with the problem.

President of the Centre for Democracy Public Foundation Ambassador István Gyarmati gave a keynote speech during the session on the role of civil society in countering the appeal of terrorism, along with prominent panellists representing leading organizations in the field. Ambassador Gyarmati shed light on the changing character of nowadays’ terrorism and elaborated on the position and the significance of civil society in tackling such a challenging threat.
