Strengthening the Institutional Capacity of the Lao National Assembly

Objectives

The general goals of the project are the modernization and the development of a more efficient, more transparent operational mechanism for the Lao National Assembly’s by identifying a modern parliamentary model which can be fit into national traditions. Further aims are to increase the effectiveness of institutional operation by establishing better communication between the various committees and political actors, and to developing a stronger dialogue between the Lao National Assembly and international actors.

Background

Based on the declared intentions of the Lao National Assembly, the institution is now ready to cooperate with international actors to initiate certain reforms connected to operational procedures. The International Centre for Democratic Transition is acting as mediator to channel best practices and transition experiences of the Hungarian Parliament, through advocacy.

Project Description

The envisioned activities for this project are two roundtable discussions and a series of webinars. The round-table discussions will be held in Laos, where Hungarian political experts will be invited to engage in constructive dialogue during which they will be able to elaborate a detailed needs assessment on the actual expectations and opinions of the Laotian political stakeholders with regards to the parliamentary operational procedures.

The project is supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary.
