Colleagues of the ICDT met with the American representatives of the Community of Democracies (CoD) and other development agencies and discussed about the possible forms of cooperation. The most significant of these was the meeting with Dr. Tomicah Tillemann, a leading advocate for the US Department of State and the representative of the US in the Governing Council of CoD. One of the most important topics of these negotiations was the transformation of the institution from a movement to a real international organisation, which is favoured by members of the CoD and the ICDT, as well. Furthermore, the president of the Council for a Community of Democracies guaranteed the support of the secretariat for the ICDT’s projects.
During the visit in Washington, representatives of the ICDT also negotiated with the two largest politically affiliated foundations, the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI). Meetings were also held with leaders of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) to raise their awareness on projects focusing on Egypt, the Western Balkans and Burma.
